Political differences between UMNO and PAS do not hinder them from standing on the same stage and fighting for the better treatment and future of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.
UMNO Information chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa said UMNO and PAS had proved their maturity by fighting for the right cause to protest against the persecution of the Rohingyas.
"I'm happy to see the country's political leaders attending the event, setting aside their differences and their disputes on the seats and upcoming general election, and just focusing on the humanitarian issue in Myanmar.
"Today we show the world that Malaysia's politics is a matured politics and Malaysia's leadership is a responsible leadership and that we do not isolate ourselves with just local issues," he told reporters at the 'Solidarity for Rohingya' gathering at the Titiwangsa Stadium here Sunday.
The gathering was attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is also UMNO president, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman, as well as other UMNO and PAS leaders and over 20,000 people, including Rohingya Muslims in Malaysia.
Annuar said the international community now really had to boycott Myanmar by imposing a trade embargo.
"If we and the international community can impose trade embargo with Iraq before, or with Iran, them why can't we do the same to help the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar?" he said.
The solidarity gathering was aimed at expressing Malaysia's concern of the persecution of the Rohingya community in Myanmar, especially in Rakhine State. -- Bernama
