Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor on Thursday announced that the sale of subsidised RON95 petrol may be restricted to low-income earners.

He said the move was in line with tightening government spending and ensuring that all subsidies are enjoyed only by deserving Malaysians.

Tengku Adnan said the matter was still being studied by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar and may be implemented as early as May this year.

“We want to impose the increase to only those who can afford it. Someone may drive a (Toyota) Alphard or even a Mercedes (Benz) but they still use RON95 petrol,” he told reporters.

Currently the retail price for RON95 is RM2.10/L (subsidised by 63 sen) and the price for RON97 is at RM2.80/L.

The price for RON97 changes according to a managed float based on market prices.

Tengku Adnan was met after handing out offer letters to 100 residents qualified to rent low-cost housing units located in Petaling Jaya at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall auditorium on Thursday.
