The Registrar of Societies (ROS) will investigate if the uniform of the Consumer Protection Association (PPPM) is similar to that of the Police.

ROS director-general Mohammad Razin Abdullah said investigations would also look into any deviation from their original objective or if there was an abuse of existing laws.

"If there is sufficient evidence, the ROS will not hesitate to take action as provided under the Societies Act 1966, including de-registering the association," he said in a statement Tuesday when commenting on a social media report that the uniform of PPPM members was similar to the Police's.

He said based on records, the association was the main body registered with the ROS on Feb 13, 2003 with the Registration number PPM-018-06-13022003 and the address at No. 3, Lorong Kurnia Jaya 1, Taman Kurnia Jaya, 25150 Kuantan, Pahang.

Mohammad Razin said the PPPM was a national association whose objective was to look after the health and safety of consumers, preserve the environment and create awareness of road safety.

Other objectives of the PPPM was to preserve public amenities provided by the government, foster harmony between the people, regardless of race and religion, and protect consumers against fraudulent activities, cheating, or getting information which was confusing.

As such, any member of the PPPM or any association registered under the Societies Act 1966 (Act 335) was not allowed to wear a uniform and be given a ranking similar to members of the enforcement, appointed and gazetted by the Government.

The exception was the use of a flag or symbol or badge which is registered, as provided under Section 50 of the same Act.
