RTD will not protect officers involved in illegal activities - DG

The Road Transport Department will not protect any of its officers involved in issuing driving licences fraudulently in Sarawak.

Its director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said the RTD would let the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) take the necessary action on those involved in the alleged sale of driving licences.

"We in the RTD will always work with the MACC whenever there is a case of such nature or that involves the integrity of our staff. We normally leave it to the MACC.

"If anyone is involved, the RTD will not protect them," he told reporters after launching a One Stop Centre for the registration of new vehicles online at the Ngu Chung Beng & Sons Corporation Sdn Bhd, here on Monday.

He said the main objective of RTD's introduction of the new system was to see a transformation in RTD's information service and to boost its integrity and online services.

The MACC had between Jan 11 and 18, detained 14 people, including three officers from the Road Transport Department (RTD) to facilitate investigations into the sale of driving licences for between RM2,500 and RM2,800 each in Sarawak.

The suspects, aged between 19 and 50, were detained in Limbang, Miri, Bintulu and Sibu, comprising three RTD officers, nine members of the public who were prospective buyers of driving licence without taking a driving test and two individuals acting as 'middle-men.
