After being in operation for two years, 'Rumah Kita', a home for women and children in Ampang, Selangor has succeeded in rescuing 54 babies born out of wedlock.
Its founder Vimmy Yasmin Abd Razak, 44, said the babies rescued were born out of wedlock and to victims of rape.
Now, in its third year, Rumah Kita has 52 unmarried pregnant women including an AIDS patient, aged between nine and 33.
"A 11-year-old victim was raped by her father, while a 33-year-old woman has been diagnosed as a mentally slow person," she told reporters at the 'Rumah Kita Cake Charity Sales' organised by Kobis Bunga Bakery here Sunday.
Yasmin said currently there are only 16 women and six babies staying in the home for free but the home does not impose any conditions on women seeking shelter at the home.
She said 'Rumah Kita' was being managed with assistance from her husband, Mohd Farid Mustafha, 44.
"The home spends about RM6,000 a month on daily expenses contributed by members of the public," said Yasmin.
She said 'Rumah Kita' was being fully maintained by volunteers and residents in the home without the need of a warden.
Meanwhile, Norul Syafinas Abu Bakar, 31, from Kobis Bunga Bakery said through sales today, RM8,790 was collected.
Norul Syafinas said she was also planning to set up a 'Rumah Kita' in Parit Buntar. - Bernama
