SINGAPORE: Singapore Apex Court has dismissed the final appeal of Malaysian Kalwant Singh, who will be executed as scheduled on Thursday (July 7, 2022).
This was confirmed by his counsel Too Xing Ji of BMS Law LLC who spoke to Bernama here today.
Kalwant, 32, has been on the death row in Singapore since he was convicted and handed down the mandatory death penalty on June 1, 2016 for drug trafficking.
His conviction and death sentence were upheld by the Court of Appeal the same year and following today's decision, Too said his execution will be carried out as scheduled.
Kalwant who hails from Cameron Highlands, Pahang was arrested in the island republic on Oct 24, 2013 and convicted on charges for possession of 60.15gm of diamorphine and trafficking 120.9gm of the drug.
He had filed a notice of motion to the Court of Appeal for a stay of his execution as well as a review of his conviction and sentence.
His stay application today was heard before Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon; Justice Andrew Phang Boon Leong; and Justice Tay Yong Kwang via the Zoom platform.
Although it was carried out virtually, Too, who jumped in last-minute representing Kalwant, said the courtroom was packed and Kalwant's family members were also present.
