Sabah to stop intake of workers from Bangladesh

The Sabah government will stick to its stand of not allowing the recruitment of workers from Bangladesh in all sectors of employment in the state.

State Resource and Information Technology Development Minister, Datuk Siringan Gubat said the matter was decided by the state cabinet at its meeting, here, today.

"Employers can engage foreign workers from countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, Nepal and Cambodia for all sectors except the service sector, which is limited to workers from Indonesia and the Philippines," he said in a statement, today.

In June, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was reported as saying that about 1.5 million workers from Bangladesh would be brought into Malaysia in phases over a three-year period.

He said this was to meet the demand of employers, especially from the plantation, construction, manufacturing and service sectors.
