Deepavali is a moment where family and friends gather happily but for former MIC President Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu but he admits that he misses spending time with his former political rival, Tan Sri M.G. Pandithan.
Samy Vellu described Pandithan as "an obedient" and "nice" man and the memories they spent together will be forever etched in his memory.
"Pandithan and myself are very good (friends). Before Deepavali day, we would perform our 'padayal' or prayers as ode to their family members who have passed on.
Recalling his memories with Pandithan, Samy Vellu said they spent tremendous time together before the latter breathed his last breath in 2008.
"At the last moment of his life, I was with him all the time. I went to see him every day and would talk to him too. To tell you the truth me and him, never quarreled even for a day. The misunderstanding is at the lower level," said the politician.
Pandithan, who once regarded Samy Vellu his mentor, was an MIC vice-president, Tapah MP and parliamentary secretary to the Trade and Industry Ministry in June 1988. His sacking came after he engaged in a fast-to-death effort, in his tireless bid to obtain charges of inciting violence and unrest within the party.
After his expulsion from MIC on July 16, 1988, Pandithan attempted a comeback but was unsuccessful. This led to the formation of IPF in August, 1990.
He also made several attempts to join Barisan Nasional but his moves were thwarted by Samy Vellu and his scathing attacks on the MIC president too, failed to make headway.
However, when Pandithan fell ill and was hospitalised, Samy Vellu became a regular visitor as the two fell into an emotional reunion.
Pandithan died on April 30, 2008 after suffering from leukemia.
