KUALA LUMPUR: Every sport that will be competing in this year's SEA Games is undergoing a final assessment to evaluate Malaysia's gold medal chances, said chef de mission Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin.
"We are in the final phase of evaluating events that have the potential to win medals, especially gold, and set our medal target. This is because every sport or event faces different challenges, especially in terms of training sessions and exposure to competitions, due to the COVID-19 pandemic," he said in a statement today.
According to him, the Vietnam Games, to be held in Hanoi from Nov 21 to Dec 2, would feature 40 sports and 526 events.
Hamidin, who is also the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president, said he would also meet with the heads of every sports association to get the latest information regarding their respective athletes and preparations soon.
The statement also said that a meeting and a briefing on preparations for the Vietnam SEA Games were held at the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) yesterday.
The meeting and briefing session with OCM chief operating officer Michelle Chai and OCM general managers Norhashimi Hussain and Fong Wan Hor were the first by Hamidin since being officially appointed as chef de mission on Tuesday (March 9).
In the statement, Hamidin also clarified that the deputy chef de mission would be confirmed within the next two weeks and that the selection committee would meet on March 18-19 to discuss the composition of athletes for the Games.
