Second Finance Minister denies GST will be raised if BN wins in by-elections

The Ministry of Finance today denied the opposition's allegation that Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be increased if Barisan Nasional (BN) win the coming by-elections in Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar.

Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said, the opposition's claim that the GST will be increased from six to eight percent is illogical and does not make sense.

"If we look from the history in politics, what does the opposition have that they can publicise so that people support them, apart from making people hate the government?

"So, they create all kinds of stories," he said to reporters after presenting the Kuala Kangsar-level MR1M Certificate of Eligibility and Work Indents, at JKR Kuala Kangsar, Jalan Taiping here.

Husni stressed, the government would always take care of the welfare of the people in the face of rising cost of living at present.

During a Save Malaysia and Citizen's Declaration joint forum yesterday, former Perak state executive councilor Datuk Hamidah Osman claimed the government will raise the GST if BN wins the by-elections in Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar which will be held on June 18.

Her allegation was supported by Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) candidate in Kuala Kangsar, Dr Ahmad Termizi Ramli, who claimed the government has reaped huge profits through the implementation of GST since April last year.
