All 11 Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen today urged the state government to explain the losses suffered by Universiti Selangor (Unisel) for three consecutive years since 2014.
Permatang state assemblyman Datuk Sulaiman Abdul Razak who represented the group said according to the 2014-2016 Unisel financial audit report, the university, which was run by the state government, had suffered losses of RM10.6 in 2014, RM16.6 million in 2015 and RM4.01 million last year.
"...and the report also showed that the Unisel's accumulated debts as of 2016 (prior to 2014) was RM126 million.
"I am very shocked because the losses incurred by Unisel is occurring every year...that is why I want to hear the explanation from the state government on how this can happen to Unisel," he told reporters at the lobby of the Selangor State Assembly Building here today.
He said the state government must look at this matter seriously because it affected the university's reputation and overall performance.
Sulaiman added that he had also received complaints from Unisel staff and students of the failure of the top leadership to manage the university well.
"We do not care if the senior management of Unisel comprises pro-Pakatan staff as long as they are capable, but our main agenda especially in education is that it should be based on integrity, transparency and capability.
"However, I was informed today that Unisel's vice-chancellor himself is giving problems to the university community because there are weaknesses in management and academic matters," he said. - BERNAMA
