The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, today gave three reasons for consenting to Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim's appointment as Menteri Besar for the second term.

The Sultan's private secretary, Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani, in a statement issued here, said the main reason was that Abdul Khalid's name was the only one submitted for the post by the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) opposition pact, namely PAS, DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

"Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim also met all the conditions required for the Selangor Menteri Besar's post as provided under the Selangor State Constitution," he added.

Mohamad Munir said another reason was that Abdul Khalid had served as Menteri Besar and the sultan opined that the experience would be useful in ensuring smooth administration of the state.

He also said that the delay in the Menteri Besar's appointment was because the Selangor Sultan was waiting for the list of possible candidates for the post from the three parties in the opposition pact.

"Apart from that, PKR president Datin Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail had said that the candidate for the Menteri Besar's post needed not necessarily be Abdul Khalid after Pakatan Rakyat (PR) won the 13th general election.

"Hence, the Sultan of Selangor was waiting for the component parties in PR to submit their candidates and in the end was satisfied that only one candidate was submitted," he added.
