Selangor UMNO has called for an investigation of local authorities that have allowed #Bebas Anwar (#Free Anwar) billboards to be put up in several places in the state.
Its Information Chief, Datuk Zein Isma Ismail (rpt) Zein Isma Ismail, said the display challenged the verdict of the courts.
"Everybody knows that he (Anwar) is in jail for the wrong he did to Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan. He is not a political prisoner," he said.
Anwar is serving a five-year sentence for sodomising Mohd Saiful, his former aide.
"How can the Selangor local authorities approve the billboards? This is a serious matter. The billboards even carry the PKR logo," he told the media after he and more than 20 other Selangor UMNO members lodged a report at the Sungai Buloh District Police headquarters.
Zein Isma, who is Subang UMNO Division chief, said the billboards were found in several areas in the state, including Ampang Jaya, Kepong and Rawang.
He called on the police, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and other relevant agencies to investigate the matter.
"Their (the Selangor government's) action is unacceptable. They are misusing the people's money," he said.
He also said that the state government was using the 'Selangorkini' organ for political purposes and distributing it in mosques and suraus on Fridays.
