Selangor will experience critical water supply for the next three years (2017-2019) following higher demand, increase in population and delay of the Langat2 Water Treatment Plant project.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said the state government had to build two plants, in Labohan Dagang and Semenyih, expected to start in the middle of this year and due for completion in 2017.
"Langat2, scheduled for completion in 2017, is expected to be delayed and only completed in 2019.
"Therefore, we have no choice but to build the two plants to meet the demand in this critical period other than the Mitigation 2 project handed over today.
"Hopefully, this can help meet the demand," he told a press conference after handing over the Mitigation 2 Water Supply project costing RM328 million to Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor), here.
The Matang Pagar Reservoir project in Rawang, is for distributing water from Phase 1 Sungai Selasa (SSP1) Water Treatment Plant, Phase 3 Sungai Selangor (SP3) and Rasah.
When completed, the eight packages of Mitigation 2 project would increase water production to 227 million litres per day.
Mohamed Azmin said migration of people, driven by employment opportunities in Selangor, contributed to higher demand for water.
"The water campaign will be stepped up among domestic consumers to reduce wastage because Selangor ranks among the highest in terms of water wastage.
"Wasting of water is unhealthy. We do not want the affordable tariffs to be the reason for the wastage," he said.
