People should not to misuse the social media for personal or political interest, which could destroy the image of the country.
A self analysis by the people themselves is greatly needed to contain the explosion of unverified information in the social media from undermining harmony in the country.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the law was not sufficient to tackle the problem.
"Postings in the social media are made without any regard for religious and racial sensitivities, leading to political hatred," he told reporters at the Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers' Aidilfitri open house here Friday.
He said in western countries, for example, the people themselves would avoid citing personal, racial and cultural issues in the social media that could spark disunity among their society.
"So I hope it would be that way in Malaysia as otherwise our society will be in chaos," he said.
Meanwhile, Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the social media should rightly be a positive platform to strengthen rapport among the communities.
He urged the people not to misuse the social media for personal or political interest, which could destroy the image of the country.
"What is happening now may be due to the actions of some irresponsible elements or those who want chaos to happen in the country.
"Be warned that those who misuse the social media will be dealt with accordingly," he said.
