A young girl drowned Saturday after falling into a swimming pool at the official residence of the Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim during a Chinese New Year event.

The deceased, identified as Amanda Dany Shah, was believed to be alone, without the supervision of her parents, during the 4.30pm incident, said police.

According to Bernama, Shah Alam district police chief ACP Azisman Alias said that the girl's parents were also the caterers for the event.

They were apparently busy with the food preparations and were unaware that their daughter was not with them, he said.

"We understand that the victim had left her parents and walked off alone to the swimming pool at the top floor of the building. We do not yet have information whether she was with others or not at the time," said Azisman.

Azisman said that it was believed Amanda drowned as the swimming pool was for adults.

The paramedics had tried, in vain, to save Amanda but she perished on the way to the Klang Hospital at about 7pm.

The case, said Azisman, has been classified as sudden death.
