Ship crew member claims trial to causing death of woman in road accident

A ship crew member was charged in the Special Traffic Court here today, to riding a motorcycle recklessly and causing the death of a woman last Thursday.
Nazri Che Lah, 44, claimed trial before Magistrate Mohamad Amin Shahul Hamid.
He was charged with riding the motorcycle bearing registration number PMX 7454 in a reckless manner, causing the death of Foo Swee Wah, 58, at Jalan Burma about 10.30am on April 6.
The charge under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 carries a maximum 10-year jail term and fine of up to RM20,000, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Fatin Hussin offered bail at RM15,000 in one surety and requested the accused's driving licence to be suspended.
However, Nazri, who was unrepresented, requested the court to reduce the bail as he could not afford it, and that he had a wife who was jobless.
The court set bail at RM10,000 in one surety, and suspended the accused's licence.
It fixed May 29 for mention of the case for the submission of documents and the appointment of a lawyer.
The incident went viral on social media when a dashboard camera recording showed a motorcyclist fleeing after hitting a woman at a pedestrian crossing.
The woman died while receiving treatment at the red zone emergency ward of of the Penang Hospital at 8.45pm on April 6.
The police arrested the motorcyclist at the hospital the next day when he came to seek treatment for injuries sustained in the incident. -- Bernama
