Muslims determine the start date of Ramadan by waiting for the moon to be sighted.
The sighting of the Ramadan new moon to determine the start of fasting for Muslims in Malaysia has been fixed on Tuesday evening, June 16 or 29th Sha'ban, 1436 AH.
The office of the Keeper of the Rulers' Seal, the Conference of Rulers in a statement said the sighting of the moon that night would be at Pontian Kecil in Johor; Falak Al-Khawarizmi Complex, Kampung Balik Batu, Tanjung Bidara in Melaka; Telok Kemang, Port Dickson (Negeri Sembilan); Bukit Melawati, Kuala Selangor (Selangor); Bukit Jugra, Banting (Selangor); Balai Cerap Selangor, Sabak Bernam (Selangor); Pantai Pasir Panjang, Mukim Pengkalan Baru, Manjong (Perak); Falak Sheikh Tahir Centre, Pantai Aceh (Penang); Kampung Pulau Sayak, Kuala Muda (Kedah); Pemandangan Indah, Pulau Langkawi (Kedah); Alor Setar Tower (Kedah); Bukit Besar, Kuala Terengganu (Terengganu); Bukit Geliga, Kemaman (Terengganu); Pulau Perhentian, Besut (Terengganu); Balai Cerap KUSZA.
Also included are Mukim Merang, Setiu (Terengganu); Bukit Kampong Tembeling, Mukim Manjur, Olak Jeram district, Kuala Krai (Kelantan); SEDC Building Tower, Jalan Tengku Putera Semerak, Kota Baharu (Kelantan); Tanjong Lubang, Miri (Sarawak); Teluk Bandung, Kuching (Sarawak); Tanjung Batu, Bintulu (Sarawak); Balai Cerap Al-Biruni, Tanjung Dumpil, Putatan (Sabah); Bukit Tanjong Batu, Nenasi (Pahang); Gunung Berincang, Cameron Highlands (Pahang); Bukit Pelindong, Kuantan (Pahang); 13th Floor, Universiti Malaysia Sabah Tower, International Campus (Labuan); Kuala Lumpur Tower (Kuala Lumpur); Putrajaya International Convention Centre (Putrajaya); and Kuala Sungai Baru, Simpang Empat (Perlis).
According to the statement, the Conference of Rulers has agreed that the Rukyah and Hisab methods be followed to determine the date for the beginning of the fasting month.
"The Keeper of the Rulers' Seal will proclaim the date for the beginning of the fast on the same night over radio and television," the statement said.
