The Sinar4Rohingya programme has raised RM454,000 in funds until Saturday since it was launched early last month.

Secretary of the programme's secretariat, Norden Mohamed said of the amount, RM200,000 was channelled to a non-governmental organisation from Malaysia stationed at the refugee camp at Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.

"Today, a sum of RM100,000 from Sinar4Rohingya was handed over to the Malaysian Medical Aid Team (MERCY Malaysia) to be used to cover the expenses of the medical centres they have established there.

"Via this programme, money donated by the public will be channelled as soon as possible to those who help Rohingya refugees there.

"People can still donate to this fund and their contributions will be channelled for the use of Rohingya refugees from time to time," he said at the 'Teddy for Rohingya' launching ceremony, here, Wednesday.

"People can buy a teddy bear and the profits from the sale will be channelled to the Sinar4Rohingya fund," he said.

According to reports, the protracted crisis in Rakhine state, has caused hundreds of thousands of Rohingya to flee Myanmar amid reports of atrocities, including rape and murder.

Meanwhile, MERCY Malaysia executive director Amran Mahzan welcomed the contribution which he said would ensure that the Rohingya refugees at Cox's Bazar received good medical care.

"Now MERCY Malaysia has two medical centres there and we plan to have more as the number of refugees is growing.
