The small car with a monumental challenge

Jam packed with features at very accommodative prices, the GWM M4 is set to stir the local car market. By Arvind Kumar.

Just for a second, let’s forget this car was designed in China, and all of the misconceptions “Made In China” products inspire. Let’s dismiss from mind, notions of cheaply duplicated copies of more expensive offerings. And just concentrate on the GWM M4 as any other car, and state the facts.

The GWM M4 will be available in three variants: Standard, comfort and premium. In its top trump form buyers will receive the following features. Are you ready? ABS, EBD, ESP, dual airbags, four-disc brakes, keyless entry, a Navigation system with surround view cameras, vehicle immobiliser, automatic air-condition, 16” wheels and leather seats. And that’s about a half of the spec-list in case you’re wondering.

Power comes from 1.5-litre four-cylinder equipped with variable valve timing capable of producing 103bhp at 6,000rpm. Peak torque is rated 138Nm at 4,200rpm and GWM claims economy figures of 6l/100km. Drive is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed gearbox. The front end sits on MacPherson independent suspension while a semi-independent torsion beam setup brings up the rear.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery as the M4 echoes cues of the Volkwagen Tiguan up front. It’s chiselled front headlamps and muscular looking front wings help lend an athletic stance. Down the sides, a sloping rear roofline leads up to pseudo Suzuki SX4 rear quarters. Having seen it in the flesh, it doesn’t look half bad. Interior space and design is well thought out too.

Measuring 1,617mm in height with a length of 3,961mm and 1,728mm width makes the M4 slightly larger than a Perodua Myvi. No surprise then, GWM’s target market are female drivers.
