The National Fatwa Council Monday decided that smoking e-cigarette or vape is ‘haram’.
The matter was confirmed by NFC chairman Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Abdul Shukor Husin at a press conference after a special meeting here last night.
He said that all the committee members agreed by giving their opinions on the 'hukum' about the decision.
The committee arrived at the collective decision after weighing all options from various aspects including syariah, medical and scientific as well as curbing bad habits among youths.
“Two working papers were presented at the meeting which touched on both health and syariah aspects,” he said.
The meeting was attended by mufti, deputy state mufti and members appointed by the Conference of Rulers (Majlis Raja-Raja).
Abdul Shukor said the usage of vape is deemed ‘haram’ based on Qaedah Saad al-Zarala which conceals incriminating habits that will cause detrimental in the future.
He said that they usage of vape is similar to smoking conventional cigarette which contains poisonous ingredients.
“Authorities and rulers have unanimously agreed that the usage of vape is haram especially when public's well-being and health are concerned.
“The decision made on Monday is parallel to that made in several Islamic countries including Kuwait, Qatar or United Arab Emirates,” he said.
