Social activist Kassim Ahmad dies
Kassim is known for his book "Hadith: A Re-evaluation" which was a critical study of the hadith as a credible source of Islamic teachings.
Academic and controversial author Kassim Ahmad died today. He was 84.
Kassim passed away at 10 am at the Kulim Hospital, according to his son Ahmad Shauqi.
Ahmad Shauqi, when contacted, told Bernama his father died of lung-related problems.
He said Kassim had been unconscious since last night.
Ahmad Shauqi said Kassim's remains would be buried in Kulim, probably after the 'Asar' prayers today or, at the latest, by tomorrow morning.
On Sept 16, Kassim alias Osman Ahmad underwent treatment for a lung infection and blocked heart valves.
He was known for his book "Hadith: A Re-evaluation" which was a critical study of the hadith (sayings of Prophet Muhammad) as a credible source of Islamic teachings.
The book was banned by the government in 1986.
