Police today denied detaining a man accused of being a suspect in the robbery of a goldsmith shop in Medan Kurau 1, Chai Leng Park here yesterday as disseminated on social media.
Penang CID chief Datuk Zakaria Ahmad said the man whose picture was circulated via Facebook and WhatsApp is believed to be not related to the case.
"So far no arrests have been made and police are still investigating via CCTV recording found in the shop and the incident location.
"The picture circulated via social media is incorrect and police will investigate how it was spread," he said when contacted by Bernama here today.
In the 11.34am incident, four men, one of them armed with two pistols ran off with 10 trays of jewellery worth more than RM600,000 from a goldsmith shop in Medan Kurau 1, Chai Leng Park, here.
Zakaria said based on investigations, police believed the robbery was carefully planned and it involved five men including the driver of a car who was waiting for four accomplices behind a house at Lorong Kurau 25.
He said the four men who robbed the shop, abandoned two motorcycles behind the house about two kilometres from the goldsmith shop before fleeing in a silver Perodua Myvi.
"Based on CCTV recording found in the housing area, they left the motorcycles before getting into the car," he said.
He said investigations found the two motorcycles recovered yesterday evening were stolen in Sentul and Selayang, Selangor recently.
Police have set up a special team to investigate the robbery case, he said.
