More than 150 passengers of Ekspres Sinaran Utara were stranded after the train was derailed in Kampung Baru, near here Saturday.
The south bound train was travelling from Butterworth to Kuala Lumpur.
A small fire believed caused by a fuel leak broke out on the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) train with ten passenger coaches at 2.20pm.
Bukit Mertajam Fire & Rescue Department operating officer Rejab Ahmad said a fire engine with six men rushed to the scene when informed of the fire at 2.25pm.
"When firemen arrived, there was thick smoke in the engine compartment. We managed to put out the fire after 36 minutes," he told reporters here.
No passengers were hurt in the derailment and fire.
