SPAD announces hike in taxi and express bus fares

The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) today announced a new rate for taxi services and express buses.
The new rate for the taxi services will take into effect immediately while for express buses will begin on May 15.
Its chairman, Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said that the new rate was decided following the increase in costs such as maintenance, insurance and cost of living.
The current fare is irrelevant with the increase in such costs, said Syed Hamid Albar in a press conference today.
The maintenance cost for taxi will increase by 33 percent while for express buses by 36 percent.
He added many may not be satisfied with the decision, however a decision has to be made taking into account the interests of the taxi and bus drivers.
He added that with the increase in taxi fares, taxi drivers will be able to purchase new taxis to provide comfort and safety to their passengers.
For taxis, the new rate will only be applicable for trips within the Klang Valley, Johor Baharu and Penang between 25 sen until 35 sen for a distance of 200 meters.
While the rate for waiting time is between 25 sen until 35 sen for the duration of 36 seconds.
Meanwhile for express busses the increase is applicable for trips around the country between the price of RM4.60 until RM11.
