Speaker confirms Taib Mahmud resigning as CM
Tan Sri Taib Mahmub will step down as the Chief Minister of Sarawak and is expected to announce his successcor in the near future.
This was confirmed and announced by Parti Pesaka Bumiputerea Bersatu (PBB) permanent chairman and Sarawak legislative assembly speaker Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, today.
Amar said the matter had been discussed during the PBB supreme council meeting held in Kuching on Saturday morning.
He explained that the meeting and the PBB committee caucus has given Taib the full mandate to name his replacement in the near future.
During the meeting, said Amar, PBB also decided that in honour of his efforts and contributions, Taib will also be proposed as the Governor of Sarawak, replacing the position held by outgoing Tun Salahuddin Abang Barieng, who is to retire on Feb 28.
Meanwhile, Taib himself when met by reporters said that he would be making an ‘important announcement’ in two days.
Taib is the longest serving Chief Minister, having held the position since 1981.
