Spotlight On Fashion Designer Syomirizwa Gupta

From rags to riches, humble beginnings is something Syomirizwa Gupta is acquainted with as he was brought up in the modest surroundings of his own home, but little did he know that his creations would end up being worn by high-profile celebrities and members of Malaysian royalty.

This gifted designer completed his secondary education at a local vocational school before receiving his Diploma in Womenswear at the reputable La Salle International Design School in KL. Syomir has come a long way (12 years) in paving a name for himself in the local fashion industry and today is the creative director for his eponymous fashion house Syomirizwa Gupta.

Some of his inspirations have come from fashion moguls like Gianni Versace and Valentino Garavani. As time went by, his fashion sense continued to develop and he found that his search for inspiration took him closer to home (Malaysia) of rich colours, shapes and designs from the East that he would merge together with western elements. Syomir is also inspired by influential and stylish women, and his Syomir Izwa for Zalora Eid 2014 and 2015 collections are masterful recounting of Asian textures and heritage housed within a very refreshing contemporary structure.

As a designer, he has a notable design aesthetic which is his combination of bold colours and simple straightforward lines that have graced feminine silhouettes of beautiful women countrywide. He has dressed legendary Malaysian singer Sheila Majid, Sazzy Falak, Elaine Daly, Marion Caunter and Sarah Lian, just to name a few. Syomir has even taken to the international stage through his designs for Carey Ng – Malaysia’s representative at the 2013 Miss Universe pageant where Ms. Ng wore Syomir’s memorable songket interpretation of the Puteri Perak ensemble during the national costume segment.

2015 proved to be quite an exhilarating year for the fashion designer because in addition to his immensely successful line for Zalora’s 2015 Eid collection, he also unveiled his 2016 Spring/Summer RTW collection at the 2015 Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week (KLFW) following the rebranding of his company.
