The Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) has urged online businesses to obtain its 'SSM BizTrust' digital certification to enhance consumer confidence in their products.

Its Business Development and Marketing Director, Farid Ahmad, said since its launch on July 21, 2017, 81 companies from over 57,000 online businesses had obtained the certification.

"The SSM BizTrust certification can help an online business entity boost consumer confidence in its products," he said.

He said this to reporters after the launch of the E-Commerce Seller Conference here today.

Deputy Minister of Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Ahmad Maslan, officiated the conference.

Farid said the companies and businesses which had received the certification would be identified with the 'SSM BizTrust' logo displayed on the web site, he said.

"Consumers will have more confidence when they buy a product from a registered web site as they can lodge a complaint with the commission if they encounter any problem with the online transaction, and SSM can track the company concerned," he said.

He urged businesses to take advantage of the free registration, which would be on until Sept 30, to obtain the certification.

"After that, a registration fee will be imposed, the amount of which will be based on the category of business," he said.

He said SSM has signed a memorandum of understanding with Lazada Malaysia whereby businesses selling products via the Lazada portal must register with SSM to ensure consumer protection.

"If there is any problem with the transaction, we can trace the seller as we have their particulars," he said.

Farid said the commission is also working closely with several e-market place providers towards enhancing consumer protection.
