Stats dept dismisses viral infographic on unemployment

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said today it has nothing to do with a social media viral infographic stating there are 2.05 million unemployed people in the country.

Saying that the figure is not from any statement it had issued, DOSM stated that the number of unemployed people in March 2020 was 610,500 compared to 521,300 in March last year.

"People should be careful and not use the DOSM name for unofficial statistics or for their own calculations," it said and called for the infographic to be removed from circulation immediately.

DOSM said information on manpower statistics for April 2020 will be published on June 15.

For information on the upcoming DOSM statistics, people can refer to the Advance Release Calendar (ARC) at the DOSM portal at www.dosm.gov.my, it said.
