Strong winds lasting about 30 minutes uprooted seven canvas canopies worth RM56,000 at the Saberkas bazaar, at 7.30pm last night.
Saberkas Night Bazaar Hawkers Association chairman Abdul Rahman Jawawi described the incident as terrifying although no casualties had been reported.
"The canvas canopies were set up three years ago by the Miri City Council at a cost of RM8,000 each; I hope the council would replace the damaged canopies with new ones," he told Bernama today.
Abdul Rahman said the incident had drastically affected the earnings of 42 food hawkers.
The bazaar is opened every Wednesday till Saturday, and daily in the evening during Ramadan as it is very popular among residents and visitors including from Brunei.
