Sultan Nazrin: A wise and intelligent ruler

Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, who was elected as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the 243th Special Meeting of Conference of Rulers Friday, is a wise ruler, who often expressed brilliant ideas in various fields at home and abroad.
Born on Nov 27, 1957, he is the eldest son of the late Sultan Azlan Shah and Tuanku Siti Bainun Mohd Ali, who holds a doctorate in Economics, Politics and Government from Harvard University.
Sultan Nazrin, 59, has held various positions including as Chancellor of University Malaya and Honorary Fellow of Worcester College, Oxford University.
He was appointed member of the Chancellor's Court of Benefactor, University of Oxford and Eminent Fellow of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies.
He is also the Financial Ambassador for the Malaysia International Islamic Financial Centre (MIFC) in addition to co-chairing the high level panel on Humanitarian Financing at the United Nations.
His contribution as a member of the panel was acclaimed by Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev at the high hevel meeting on measures to deal with large scale movements of refugees and migrants, held in conjunction with the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September.
He also received a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from the Lions Clubs International Foundation based in Chicago, the highest award given to individuals for humanitarian services, in addition to receiving the Global Islamic Finance Leadership Award 2012.
Sultan Nazrin was proclaimed as the Sultan of Perak at the Balairong Seri (Throne Room) of the Istana Iskandariah before the burial of his father in May 2014.
Sultan Nazrin married Tuanku Zara Salim on May 17, 2007 and has a son, Raja Azlan Muzaffar Shah and a daughter, Raja Nazira Safya.
When his father was appointed as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Nazrin Shah was appointed as the Regent of Perak from April 1989 to 1994.
Sultan Nazrin Shah is also known to give constructive criticism to government agencies, government institutions and non-governmental organisations to improve the quality of the institutions.
He also rebuked giant companies relating to the government, led by Malays who exhibited disregard for the national language. -- Bernama
