A potential candidate of the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) for the Lanang parliamentary seat in the next general election suffered burns on his face and body yesterday in what is believed to be an acid attack.
Wong Ching Yong, 59, deputy chairman of the SUPP Dudong Branch, was walking from his office to his parked car at Jalan Tuanku Osman at 12.15 pm when one of two men splashed him with what looked like acid, said Sibu Police chief Saiful Bahri Abdullah.
He said Wong, who had an accounting firm here, heard someone call out his name and turned around, and one of the two unidentified men splashed him with the liquid.
"Wong suffered 18 per cent burns on his face and body, but is in stable condition," he said when contacted via WhatsApp.
It is learnt that Wong ran to a nearby bookstore to wash off the liquid from his face, hands and body and his elder brother sent him to a private hospital.
