Suspect in child kidnapping case detained while begging

Police on Monday detained a man suspected to be involved in the kidnapping of a seven-year-old boy last Friday.

Kelantan police chief, Datuk Mazlan Lazim said the 22-year-old suspect was caught by members of the public while he was begging in front of the Muhammadi Mosque, here, at 10.15am.

"They were suspicious of him and apprehended him before handing him over to the police.

"Our initial investigation found that the suspect is from Terengganu," he said at a press conference on the case held at the Kelantan contingent police headquarters, here, today.

Mazlan said the suspect was being investigated to determine if he was involved with a kidnapping syndicate.

"At the moment, we do not find any other victims. However, further investigation will be conducted and the case investigated under Section 363 of the Penal Code," he said.

In the incident on May 22, the victim had gone to the Muhammadi Mosque with his father for Isyak prayers before he went missing at about 9pm.

The victim was found by the public the next day begging at a supermarket before he was handed over to his father, Kamarolzaman Mohamad, 50, a trader at the Siti Khadijah Market, here.
