The police have detained a motorist who allegedly rammed his car into a police roadblock in Bayan Lepas here early Sunday morning.
When the roadblock was rammed about 2.30am in Jalan Tun Dr Awang, the man was spotted ferrying four women, believed to be Indonesian illegal immigrants.
However, there was no sign of the women when the 32-year-old suspect was later nabbed in Jalan Paya Terubong.
Barat Daya police chief Supt Anuar Omar said the suspect had earlier rammed into the roadblock and sped off towards Jalan Paya Terubong where he was eventually cornered by a police team.
He said when the police asked the man to alight from his car, the latter reacted recklessly, by reversing the vehicle and almost hitting one of the policemen.
At that juncture, the police were forced to open fire at the car's tyres before detaining the suspect after a struggle, he added.
"Initial investigations revealed the women, believed to be illegals, were found to have been left at another location to evade the police.
"We have not ruled out the possibility the suspect was a member of a human trafficking syndicate," said Anuar.
