Tackle online cheating attempts wisely, consumers told

Malaysians should be well aware of their power as consumers to be able to decide and act promptly and wisely when facing online cheating attempts.

Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Henry Sum Agong said in the uncertain global economy and aggressive use of digital technology, consumers had no choice but to face increasingly challenging consumerism issues.

"As such, consumers must equip themselves with knowledge on various aspects of consumerism, including social, economy and the current environment," he said when launching the 2017 World Consumer Rights Day celebration here Wednesday.

He said the theme of the celebration, which is "Building a Digital World Consumers Can Trust", was indeed apt with the rapid development of technology and Malaysians were not lagging behind in making optimal use of the available technology.

In PETALING JAYA, Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA) expressed hope that the Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry would consider its proposal for a 14-day cooling off period for e-commerce transactions.

FOMCA deputy president Mohd Yusof Abdul Rahman said a memorandum containing the proposal was submitted to the ministry last August. -- Bernama
