Taman Medan rep says cross sign protest politically motivated
She also advised those who were involved in the protest to go back to the true teaching of Islam.
Taman Medan state assemblywoman Haniza Mohd Talha said the protest at Taman medan yesterday over the sign of a cross on a church building was politically motivated.
“The incident at Taman Medan is politically motivated. I felt that I need to explain the situation as the UMNO PJS members’ action had evoked negative perspective towards Islam and the Muslims,” she wrote on her Facebook today.
She said one of the demonstrators Munaliza Hamzah was a Barisan Nasional candidate who lost to Haniza in the 12th general election.
“Upon investigation, those participated in the gathering were found to be UMNO PJS members who had and are still holding position in Youth and Wanita division or branches,” she said.
“Their action had insulted the Muslims especially those in Taman Medan. They believe the Muslims faith is so weak that a church and a sign of the cross in their area can make the Muslims turn away from Islam,” she said.
She also advised those who were involved in the protest to go back to the true teaching of Islam.
Meanwhile, Twitter users had also slammed the action of the protesters online and called on them to be fair and rational.
It was reported in The Star yesterday that a group of 50 people had gathered to protest the sign of cross outside a shop lot used as a church in Taman Medan.
The group had demanded for the cross to be taken down and argued that the sign influence the minds of the younger residents there.
