Tamil Tigers suspects arrested in PJ, Klang
KHALID: Items seized from the probable suspects include propaganda materials, media equipment and foreign currencies totalling more than RM20,000.
The Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division has detained three men, suspected to be members of the Liberation Tigers Of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), more known as Tamil Tigers.
Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar reportedly said the trio, detained under the Immigration Act, were in a bid to revive the now defunct Tamil Tiger terrorist group.
He said the suspects who were believed to be in the country since 2004, were nabbed at different locations in Petaling Jaya and Klang on May 15.
"They were using Malaysia as a base to secure funds, spread their propaganda and were attempting to revive the defunct terrorist group," he said.
Khalid said police also seized LTTE propaganda materials, media equipment and foreign currencies from 24 nations totalling RM20,176.53.
"The suspects had been using United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cards here to avoid action by authorities."
Khalid added that the police will be working closely with the UNHCR office here to ensure that their identity cards are not exploited by terrorists to hide or conduct any terrorism act.
