KUALA LUMPUR: Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) has obtained the Higher Education Ministry's approval to be upgraded to a full-fledged university, and is now known as Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT).
In making the announcement today, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, who is also TARC Education Foundation Board of Trustees chairman, said the achievement was the culmination of the hard work and excellent track record of the institution.
"In the last 53 years, this institution has grown to be widely acknowledged and recognised for its excellent education and training, especially in the areas of management and technology. Building on this solid foundation, TAR UMT is poised for a bigger role not only in Malaysia but also beyond the borders," he told reporters at the announcement ceremony here.
Wee also launched a logo design competition for TAR UMT based on its philosophy of Beyond Education.
The competition, which runs until May 11, 2022, offers a grand prize of RM10,000, followed by RM5,000 for the second place and RM2,000 for third place.
Wee said TAR UMT aims to become a renowned and prestigious talent development hub that contributes significantly to the growth of industries and socio-economic well-being of the communities in Malaysia and ASEAN.
"A 10-year Roadmap from 2021 to 2030 has been crafted outlining the strategies the institution will embark on to achieve its goal of becoming a renowned Hub for Developing Future-proof Talents in Malaysia and this region.
"More importantly, TAR UMT will continue the legacy of TAR College and TAR UC in providing quality education of international standards to Malaysians at an affordable fee.
"It will continue to serve the wider community through a wide spectrum of activities and wants to be a university for the people regardless of race, class and creed," said Wee.
The institution was founded more than five decades ago by the late Tun Tan Siew Sin, the then president of MCA.
