Residents of several areas in Terengganu have been given the green light to return home as the flood subsided.

Many were unable to salvage their belongings such as washing machines, fridge and even furnitures.

Residents of the Bukit Payong low-cost houses, said that the flood this time was beyond expectation, and the losses they have to bear was colossal.

“We’re going home to see our houses… I think the losses amount to about three to five thousand. And we didn’t get to move our things,” said one of the flood victims, Mohd Yusri Affendy Yahya to Astro AWANI.

Another victim, Sarina Mohd Sarip said: “Everything was ruined by the flood water. And it’s been in that condition for a few days. Last year, four cupboards, and all four I had to throw away... then I bought new ones. Now, those are also ruined… so all my things will be ruined just like that.”

Efforts of those who managed to save their belongings by placing it at higher levels was in vain when it continued to rain.

“All the things are damaged… my fridge, furnitures, everything. The water kept increasing because it was raining non-stop,” said another flood victim, Fauziah Sharaie.

One resident, Muhammad Yassin Muda lamented: “The cleaning-up process is worse than the process of carrying out things. All the damaged goods have to be thrown away. Whatever we can salvage, we salvage. But the rest, there’s nothing we can do. Maybe just move out altogether.”
