Terengganu police to monitor dissemination of false news over new media

The police have warned the public against disseminating false news via the new media which could lead to instigation and confusion on the political situation in Terengganu.

State police chief Datuk Jamshah Mustapa said dissemination of news from inaccurate sources could trigger chaos and threaten public order.

As such, he said, the police were now monitoring the new media such as Facebook, Whatsapp, blogs and social websites for widespread inaccurate news from unknown sources.

"I urge all quarters to countercheck the news they receive with reliable sources first, before passing them on," he told a media conference here on Tuesday.

Jamshah said the police were now liaising with the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission to detect and tackle the dissemination of inaccurate news via the new media.

Meanwhile, he said the police would boost patrols in several strategic locations to prevent untoward incidents such as demonstrations and the like.

"The situation in Terengganu is still under control and trouble-free and we urge political leaders to advise their supporters against carrying out processions which can trigger chaos," he said.

Former menteri besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said, Ajil State Assemblyman Ghazali Taib and Bukit Besi State Assemblyman Roslee Daud have declared leaving Umno early Tuesday morning, to become independents. The action followed the appointment of new Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman on Monday night.
