Thailand sets out four-pronged approach to tackle Myanmar crisis

KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand has set out four key approaches to addressing the crisis in Myanmar, focusing on humanitarian aid, political dialogue, constructive engagement, and a stronger ASEAN role, a foreign ministry spokesperson said.
Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura said the first approach centres on providing humanitarian assistance as a pragmatic step toward fostering dialogue and peace in Myanmar.
“Thailand believes that humanitarian aid not only eases the suffering of the Myanmar people but also opens the door to broader discussions,” Nikorndej told a news conference.
The second approach aims to encourage dialogue among all groups to ensure Myanmar’s general elections, scheduled for December 2025, are free, fair and transparent.
The third focuses on promoting constructive engagement among Myanmar’s stakeholders, regional neighbours, and the international community.
“Talks that extend beyond electoral matters are vital, as they form the foundation for lasting peace,” Nikorndej said.
The final approach seeks to strengthen ASEAN’s mechanisms for dealing with the Myanmar situation, including through special missions previously carried out by the bloc.
“Thailand remains committed to supporting ASEAN’s role as the main platform in the search for a peaceful solution,” he added.
Thailand has repeatedly urged Myanmar’s authorities to ensure that planned elections are credible and involve all stakeholders. The polls are expected to take place on 28 December, nearly five years after the military seized power on February 1, 2021.
