Though not winning the state election, Bill Kayong respected by many in Sarawak

Bill Kayong, 43, was a social activist who has fought a lot for the welfare of the Dayak community.
Malaysia was shocked this morning with the news of PKR Sarawak politician and Dayak activist Bill Kayong who was shot dead in broad daylight in Miri.
Who is Bill Kayong?
1. Bill is the secretary of PKR Miri branch.
2. Aged 43, he has also served as political secretary to Miri Member of Parliament, Dr Michael Teoh.
3. Graduated from Reid Kerr College, United Kingdom.
4. A social activist who is also a member of Persatuan Dayak Sarawak (PEDAS).
5. Vocal in fighting for the welfare of the Dayaks, especially on the issue of native customary rights to land.
6. Contested as a first-timer in the May 7 state election for the Bekenu state seat and managed to win 1,220 votes.
7. Lost to Barisan Nasional candidate Rosey Yunus with a difference of 4,789 votes in a four-cornered fight.
8. His last Facebook posting shared on Monday evening was on the missing MH370 flight.
Based on observations in social networking sites, despite not winning the election, Bill seemed well-respected by the Dayak community in particular, and the state in general.
Majority of them were surprised with what has happened and hoped that those responsible will be brought to justice.
His colleagues in politics too poured out condolence messages.
