Three land related laws to be amended, improved

The National Land Council (MTN) has agreed to amend and improve the National Land Code (Act 56/1965), Land Acquisition Act 1960 and the Strata Titles Act 1985.

The 72nd Meeting of the National Land Council here today also agreed that the government impose a moratorium to restrict the ownership of homes sold under the 1Malaysia Civil Servants Housing Project (PPA1M) and the 1Malaysia People's Housing Project (PR1MA).

According to a statement issued in conjunction with the MTN chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the draft amendments on the three acts had been studied by the Attorney-General's Chambers and approved by the Cabinet.

The proposed amendments in the form of amendment bills would be tabled at the coming Parliament session, it said.

The last time the National Land Code was amended was in 2008, the Land Acquisition Act in 1998 and Strata Titles Act in 2013.

The statement said the proposed amendments in the form of schedules and methods would be made by the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment and would be gazetted to be in force, together with the amended Acts in future.

For the National Land Code, it involved amendments to more than 70 sections including the introduction of three new sections, as well as new procedures for the extension of title term, parcel tax and electronic submission.

"The amendments of the National Land Code this time, are aimed at improving registration procedures and service delivery, revenue collection system, disposal procedures and land development.

"It is also to streamline with some of the basic and current needs, besides strengthening the enforcement aspects," said the statement.

It added the amendments of the act would take into account the needs to provide the corresponding provision (corresponding amendments), in line with the amendments of the Strata Titles Act 1985 and the Land Acquisition Act 1980.
