Three Turks to be deported to Turkey - DPM

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Home Minister, said it was the Malaysian government's responsibility to deport them to their country of origin.

"Why should we burden another country (by sending them to that country?.

"I leave it to the police to take further action," he told reporters after attending the Home Ministry's monthly assembly, here, today.

Ahmad Zahid was commenting on the request made by Ayse Gul Karaman, 38, wife of Turgay Karaman, one of the three Turkish men detained, for her husband not be deported to their country of origin for fear of being tortured.

Last week, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed the arrest of two Turkish nationals, Turgay Karaman, 43, and Ihsan Aslan, 37, for being a threat to Malaysia's security. Prior to their arrest, their wives claimed that the two had been kidnapped.

The third Turkish man was arrested by police in Pahang on May 4, also for being a threat to national security.

The three were detained to facilitate the investigation under Section 130 of the Penal Code.

On the status of the wives and children of the three Turkish detainees, Ahmad Zahid said this would be discussed with the Turkish embassy for them to be repatriated to their country of origin.

"Don''t worry...we too have humane feelings in this matter. If their wives and children are innocent, they will not be penalised and will be repatriated," he said.

Asked whether they could choose to continue living in this country, Ahmad Zahid said: "If they are qualified to have a residence pass, for instance, or multiple entrance visa, we will allow them."
