A fire razed three wooden houses in Jalan Madrasah, Jelutong here last night.
However, no casualties were reported as the families managed to escape in time in the 9.25pm incident.
A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said when firemen arrived, the terrace houses were completely burnt.
Hayati Abu Hassan, 53, a victim, said the houses were occupied by her extended family including three of her children who were deaf.
"We escaped with the clothes on our backs. It is going to be a bleak Aidilfitri for us," she told reporters at the scene.
Meanwhile, Timur Laut district chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said initial investigations showed the fire started from the kitchen of one of the houses after a gas stove was not switched off after cooking.
