People from all over the nation thronged to pay their respects to the late Karpal Singh at the Batu Gantung crematorium today.
Many took advantage of the weekend to witness the last journey of the DAP veteran statesman, also known as the 'Tiger of Jelutong’.
The atmosphere was melancholic surrounding the crematorium when Karpal’s body was placed on the combustion platform.
The body of the deceased was cremated at about 2 pm in the presence of the people.
Before arriving at the crematorium around 1:25pm, the funeral procession made its way from the Seri Pinang hall to the Georgetown high court building, state assembly and St Xavier's school.
The procession was accompanied by the school band playing the song ‘When the saints come marching in’.
Besides family members and friends, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, fellow veteran DAP leader Lim Kit Siang, and a line of state Exco members escorted Karpal’s body.
More than 10,000 people made up by Pakatan Rakyat coalition leaders, family members and friends filled the Seri Pinang hall to pay their respects to the deceased, who was honoured with a state funeral.
The Sikh religious prayers by family members was also held at the hall. They blanketed Karpal’s coffin with a large cloth with a tiger image on it.
On Thursday, the veteran DAP leader dap was killed in an automobile accident at 301.6km, at North-South Highway heading north near the Gua Tempurung, Perak at about 1.10am.
Karpal is survived by a wife, five children and 11 grandchildren.
