Toddler hospitalised after abuse by step-grandmother
Initial examination found that there were many bruises and also new and old wounds all over her body.
A four-year-old girl suffered multiple injuries on her body and face including a swollen left eye, believed due to abuse by her step-grandmother.
The injuries were discovered by a medical officer at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital, Kuala Terengganu, who was treating the victim at about 2am, Monday.
Acting district police chief, DSP Idris Mohamed said the victim was brought to the hospital by her uncle for treatment after she fell while playing.
Idris said the initial examination found that there were many bruises and also new and old wounds all over her body.
"Her uncle claimed that he was asked by her grandfather, who is also her guardian, to send the girl to the hospital.
"The victim's uncle is suspecting that the girl had been abused based on her injuries before taking her to the hospital," said Idris when contacted by Bernama.
Idris said according to the uncle, the girl's grandfather had asked him to send her to hospital because he could not stand seeing his granddaughter being abused by her step-grandmother.
"The victim is still hospitalised and in stable condition and we are still waiting for the medical report from the hospital," he said.
Idris said the case was being investigated under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001.
