It is still too early to link the burnt car found at an oil palm plantation in Kampung Sungai Samak to an individual who is former Malaysia Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy director of prosecution, Kevin Anthony Morais.
Hilir Perak police chief ACP Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the police is still waiting for the report from the Forensics Unit and Chemistry Department following the finding of the vehicle before making any statements about the link with its (the vehicle) actual owner.
Shuhaily said the police is confident that the incident could be linked to an organised crime activity as the car’s chassis number has been modified to make it difficult for the identification process.
He explained that the police is still waiting for the full report from the forensic unit before making any statement on social and alternative media.
According to him, the police received the information regarding the vehicle which resembles a Proton Perdana and Honda Accord from members the public at 10.10am on Saturday.
He added, no items were found in the vehicle which could be used as substantial evidence linking the vehicle with the officer.
The case will be investigated further at Sentul police headquarters and his team will handle the recovery of the vehicle under Section 435 of the Penal Code, for mischief by fire.
“I want to affirm here that it is still too early for us to make viral this story, linking it to an individual who is so sensitive and I hope this matter can be stopped first until the report is done.
“It is a premeditated crime but we cannot link the vehicle to the personality until we get the confirmation from forensic experts and the Chemistry Department. Only then can we confirm that the vehicle belongs to the said personality,” said Shuhaily.
The villager who discovered the burnt car in Hutan Melintang, claimed that the car was still burning when he stumbled upon it Saturday morning.
A police report had been lodged by Morais’ family members yesterday, around 7pm, after they failed to contact him.
Morais is now with the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).
It was reported that Morais was last seen leaving his apartment in Menara Duta for work on Friday morning, using his official government-government car bearing the registration WA 6264 Q.
In other development, MACC Intelligence division director Datuk Azam Baki in a statement said no parties should jump the gun as the case is being investigated by the police and MACC.
