A trader today pleaded not guilty in the Syariah High Court here to a charge of explaining the teachings of the Millah Ibrahim@Abraham deviant sect, which is in conflict with Islamic teachings.
Wan Ramlah Megat Razalli, 48, made the plea after the charge was read to her before syariah judge Ibrahim Deris.
In the amended charge, she is accused of together with Mohd Fazil Mohd Yunus, 38, changing the understanding of the word "Allah" to mean "tuan" (lord) in verse 64 of Surah (Chapter) Al-Nisaa' in the Quran, believed to be part of the Millah Ibrahim@Abraham deviant doctrine.
She is alleged to have committed the offence at a business premises, Second Floor, No. 10-2, Jalan 2A/27A, Section 1, Wangsa Maju, here, between 10pm and 10.30pm on Nov 3, 2014.
The offence is under Section 4(1) of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Federal Territories) Act 1997, which carries a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or a jail term of up to three years or whipping not exceeding six strokes, or a combination of two penalties, upon conviction.
Wan Ramlah, a single mother, also pleaded not guilty to another charge of having in possession a book, "Al Kitab Berita Baik" (Christian publication), at the same place and time.
The charge is under Section 13(1)(b) of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Federal Territories) Act 1997, which provides for a fine of up to RM3,000 or two years' jail, or both.
Four others, namely Wan Ramlah's daughter, Puteri Najlaa Jaafar, 24, two private college students, Aizat Firdaus Azmi and Syed Aiman Akmal Syed Ahmad Akmal, both 20, and cook Muhammad Asyraf Ibrahim, 30, also pleaded not guilty to the amended charge of abetting by taking part in the session conducted by Mohd
Fazil and Wan Ramlah at the same place and time.
Aizat Firdaus also pleaded not guilty to having with him two books, "Al Kitab Berita Baik" and "Muka Ketat - evolusi daripada buku bintang", that are in conflict with Islamic teachings.
Senior syariah prosecutor, Zainor Rashid Hassin appeared for the prosecution, while Syed Aiman was represented by lawyer Mohd Tajuddin Abd Razak and Wan Ramlah, Puteri Najlaa and Muhammad Asyraf, by lawyer Rifahmi Musikin.
On Nov 4 last year, all the accused were charged with spreading the Millah Ibrahim@Abraham deviant teachings, but the prosecution today amended the charges against them.
