Traffic policeman injured after being rammed by 'Mat Rempit'

A traffic policeman was injured after he was rammed by a 'mat rempit' who tried to escape a road block at the Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah intersection in Bayan Baru near here, early today.
Southwest District police chief Supt Anuar Omar said in the 4.30am incident, Constable Muhammad Ameer Jamalidan and a team of policemen were conducting operations codenamed 'Ops Ambang Tahun Baru' and 'Ops Samseng Jalanan' in Bayan Lepas and Bayan Baru.
"The policeman tried to flag down and stop a motorcycle ridden by a teenage boy, but he tried to escape before hitting the victim.
"Following the incident, the 17-year-old who is still schooling, fell on the road before being arrested," he said here, today.
He said the policeman suffered injuries to his left eyebrow, nose, as well a broken tooth, and was sent to a private hospital in Bayan Baru.
Anuar said initial investigations revealed the teenager had a rider's license, and he was remanded to facilitate investigations into the case.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 333 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant from performing his duties by causing grievous hurt.
Meanwhile, he said in the operation which was held from 10pm yesterday to 6am today, a total of 149 motorcycles were inspected, and 35 of them were seized for various traffic offences and crimes.
"During the operation, we also examined 223 people, including 21 women and all of them were aged 14 to 35. The police arrested three men after they tested positive for drugs," he said.
